How it works

Add SiteTran to BigCommerce in three steps

SiteTran runs as a small Widget Code in your Stencil theme's base layout. BigCommerce keeps rendering your store as usual, and SiteTran shows each shopper their language.

1

Create your SiteTran site

Sign up free and create a site for your store. SiteTran gives you your Widget Code, which adds the language dropdown to your storefront.

2

Paste it into base.html

Open your theme's files, then paste the Widget Code into templates/layout/base.html right before </body> and save and apply the file.

Storefront›Themes›Advanced›Edit Theme Files
3

Translate and publish

Open your store and pick a language. SiteTran discovers your text as you browse, then you translate it with AI, your own translators, or both, and publish.

What the Widget Code looks like
<script>var sitetran = {site_id: your_site_id};</script>
<script src="//c.sitetran.com/widget/v3.js"></script>
<div id="sitetran_translate_element"></div>

SiteTran gives you your own ready-to-paste code, with your site ID already in it. The div is where the language dropdown appears.

No Edit Theme Files option?Marketplace themes are read-only. Choose Make a copy from the Advanced menu, apply the copy, and edit that.
Updating your theme laterA copied theme doesn't get marketplace updates. When you move to a new version, paste the Widget Code into its base.html before you apply it.
Why base.html, not Script Manager?Script Manager is built for <script> tags, and the Widget Code also has a div that places your dropdown. One file keeps all three lines together.

Answers to the questions BigCommerce merchants ask

Stencil storefronts load a lot after the first page view: filtered results, quick view, the cart preview. Here's how SiteTran handles each part of a BigCommerce store.

Translated

Faceted search and sorting

When a shopper ticks a filter, sorts or pages through a category, Stencil themes swap in new results without a full reload. SiteTran watches the page and translates them as they appear, along with filter names and values from your product options.

Translated

Quick view, quick search and cart preview

These open in modals and dropdowns that load after the page. SiteTran translates them when they open, so a shopper can browse, compare and add to cart without leaving their language.

Translated

Page Builder, web pages and blog

Text, button and HTML widgets you drop in with Page Builder render on the page like the rest of your theme, so they're translated too. So are web pages such as Shipping & Returns and your blog posts.

Use variables

Options, bulk pricing and stock messages

Option labels like Size and Color are translated as phrases. For messages where a number changes, such as bulk pricing tiers or "Only 3 left", turn on Automatic Number Variables so one translation covers every value.

Works as before

Prices and multi-currency

Your catalog, price lists and currency conversion keep running in BigCommerce, and the currency selector works as before. SiteTran translates the words around your prices and never writes back to your products.

Works per storefront

Apps, Multi-Storefront and B2B

Text that apps add to your storefront is translated like any other text. With Multi-Storefront, add the Widget Code to each storefront's theme. B2B Edition's Buyer Portal has its own translation settings in BigCommerce.

Page by page

Every storefront page, in your shopper's language

SiteTran loads from your theme's base layout, so every page built on it is translated, from the home page and filtered categories to the cart and My Account.

Browse to cart

From first click to cart, in their language

Shoppers browse categories, filter results, open quick view, read reviews and check their cart in their own language, so nothing gets lost before they decide to buy.

Account pages are translated too, and you choose which personal details, such as addresses and order history, stay exactly as written.

Built into BigCommerce

How checkout speaks your shopper's language

Like every storefront translation tool, checkout, order confirmation and order emails use BigCommerce's own language settings. BigCommerce's checkout comes pre-translated into English, French, German, Italian, Norwegian, Polish, Portuguese, Spanish, Swedish, Danish and Dutch, and shows your storefront's language. Your theme's language files can add or adjust checkout text.

To show each shopper checkout in their own language, BigCommerce's multi-language storefronts cover checkout and order emails. Book a call and we'll help you plan checkout for your markets.

Every way to make a BigCommerce store multilingual

BigCommerce made multi-language storefronts generally available in August 2026, and the App Marketplace has translation apps that work very differently. Here's what each approach involves.

BigCommerce multi-languageBuilt in, from Localization settings Proxy translation appsFor example Weglot, ConveyThis, Linguise Google Translate widgetsFor example Easy Language Translate SiteTranOne Widget Code in base.html
How it works You add a translation for each product, category and setting in the Translations Manager, or send them with the GraphQL Translations API. The app serves translated copies of your pages, usually on language subdomains such as fr.yourstore.com, set up with DNS records. A widget sends the page to Google's machine translation in the shopper's browser. SiteTran translates your storefront as it renders in the shopper's browser, using translations you control.
What's covered Catalog, categories, brands, navigation, checkout, emails and more. Theme text comes from your theme's language files. Storefront pages. Checkout depends on the app and on BigCommerce's checkout script rules. Visible text on pages where the widget loads. Every page on your base layout, including filters, quick view, Page Builder widgets, blog and app content.
Who translates You or your team, field by field. BigCommerce lists AI-assisted translations as coming later. Machine translation, then manual edits or paid human translation. Google machine translation only. DeepL, Google Translate or OpenAI, plus your own translators and reviewers.
Languages Up to five per storefront. 100+, with language counts tied to plan. 100+. 187+, unlimited on every plan.
Language URLs for SEO Yes: language subfolders, translated product URLs and language sitemaps. Yes, on subdomains or subdirectories, often on higher plans. Usually no. Same URLs by default. Language URLs through the Static Translation API and a proxy.
Changes to your store Turn on languages. The language selector needs a recent theme, such as Cornerstone 6.19.0 or newer. Install the app and add DNS records per language. Install the app. Paste the Widget Code once. No DNS or catalog changes.

Details checked on October 20, 2026 from BigCommerce's documentation and each app's public BigCommerce listing or integration page. Approaches can be combined, for example BigCommerce's checkout translations with SiteTran on the storefront.

Translation quality

Catalog-scale translation, with the control of a professional workflow

A BigCommerce catalog can hold thousands of product names, option labels and descriptions. Start with machine translation, refine with your own team, and decide what goes live.

  • Machine translation from DeepL, Google and OpenAI

Get suggestions for any phrase, or translate new phrases automatically as shoppers find new products. You choose whether they're approved automatically or reviewed first.

  • Translators and reviewers per language

Invite your own translators, or your distributor in each market, and choose who can approve. Turn on AI Translation Review for a second opinion on each translation.

  • Glossary, rules and translation memory

Lock brand names and technical terms in the Glossary, set Translation Rules that AI translation follows, such as formal "Sie" in German, and reuse past work with Similar Phrases.

  • A language dropdown that fits your theme

Choose from three dropdown types, with or without flags, and add your own CSS so it sits neatly beside your currency selector. Shoppers are switched to their browser language automatically.

Everything search and social cards read

SiteTran translates more than visible text. When a shopper switches language, the page's metadata switches with it.

  • Page titles and meta descriptions of products, categories and web pages
  • Open Graph and Twitter tags for link previews
  • Product image alt text, tooltips, placeholders and ARIA labels
  • The page's lang attribute, set to the selected language

Language URLs for Google

By default, every language uses your store's existing URLs and the shopper's choice is remembered. For a separate, indexable page per language, SiteTran's Static Translation API returns translated HTML for URLs like these:

yourstore.com/safety/work-gloves/English
yourstore.com/es/safety/work-gloves/Subdirectory
es.yourstore.com/safety/work-gloves/Subdomain

These pages are served by a proxy or edge worker in front of your storefront. BigCommerce's own language subfolders are another route, using translations stored in BigCommerce. We'll help you choose.

Launch checklist

Before you open your store to a new market

Six BigCommerce-specific checks that separate a translated store from one that sells in that language.

  1. Click through every state

SiteTran discovers text when it's shown. Tick each filter, open quick view and the cart preview, run a search and trigger your pop-ups once, or turn on Machine Translation Auto Translate so new text is translated as shoppers find it.

  2. Keep one language switcher

Recent Stencil themes show their own language selector when BigCommerce languages are turned on. Pick one approach, and position SiteTran's dropdown with CSS next to your currency selector.

  3. Protect SKUs and brand names

Add brands and product lines to the Glossary. In your theme templates, add translate="no" to SKUs, part numbers and anything that must never change.

  4. Keep customer data private

My Account shows addresses and order history. Exclude those elements with sitetran.ignore_selectors, or turn off Public Phrase Discovery for stores with sensitive data.

  5. Fix long labels and image text

German and French filter labels and buttons run longer. Add CSS per language where a label wraps, and swap carousel images that have English text baked in.

  6. Match checkout to your markets

Place a test order in each language you launch and confirm checkout reads the way shoppers in that market expect, adding BigCommerce's checkout translations where you need them.

Troubleshooting

BigCommerce translation not working? Check these first

Most setup problems come down to which theme was edited, a security setting, or a translation that isn't live yet.

1The language dropdown doesn't appear

  1. Check that you edited the theme that's applied to your storefront. A copy you edited but didn't apply won't show the code.
  2. Make sure all three lines are in base.html, including the div.
  3. In SiteTran, make sure the language is both Active and Live.
  4. If Hide All Widgets On Site (dev mode) is on, add ?sitetran=on to your URL.
Language not appearing in the dropdown →

2It worked, then disappeared

  1. A newer theme version or a different theme was applied. The new theme doesn't have your edit.
  2. Open Edit Theme Files on the current theme and paste the Widget Code into base.html again.
  3. Your translations are stored in SiteTran, so they come back as soon as the code does.

3Blocked by a Content Security Policy

  1. If you set a Content Security Policy in BigCommerce's Security & Privacy settings, it can block the widget.
  2. Allow c.sitetran.com for scripts, images and connections, and www.sitetran.com for connections.
  3. Check your browser's console for blocked requests.

4Some text is still in the original language

  1. SiteTran discovers text when it's shown, so open the filters, quick view and pop-ups you need translated.
  2. A translation appears only after it's approved and published.
  3. To translate new text automatically, turn on Machine Translation Auto Translate.
How dynamic content is translated →

5My changes aren't showing yet

  1. After you approve and publish, translation data can take up to 30 seconds to update.
  2. A shopper's browser can keep translation data cached for up to 10 minutes.
  3. Try a hard refresh or a private window.
New translations aren't appearing →

6SKUs or customer names are translated

  1. Add translate="no" to those elements in your theme templates, or list their selectors in sitetran.ignore_selectors.
  2. Use variables for names, dates and prices inside a sentence.
  3. Add brand and product line names to the Glossary.
Exclude phrases from translation →

BigCommerce translation questions

Email support
How do I add SiteTran to my BigCommerce store?
Create a free SiteTran site and copy your Widget Code from the Dropdown Style page. In your BigCommerce control panel, go to Storefront, then Themes, open Advanced and choose Edit Theme Files. Open templates/layout/base.html, paste the code right before the closing </body> tag, and save and apply the file. Then open your store and pick a language from the dropdown. SiteTran starts discovering your phrases so you can translate them.
Do I need an app from the BigCommerce App Marketplace?
No. SiteTran is not an App Marketplace app. It works as a short Widget Code in your theme's base layout, so there is no app to install, authorize or keep updated, and it does not need access to your store's data.
Can I add the Widget Code with Script Manager instead?
We recommend base.html. The Widget Code includes a <div id="sitetran_translate_element"></div> that decides where the language dropdown appears, and Script Manager is built for <script> tags. Pasting the whole code into base.html keeps the three lines together and loads them on every storefront page that uses your theme's base layout.
My theme doesn't show Edit Theme Files. What should I do?
Marketplace themes are read-only. Make a copy of your theme from the Advanced menu, apply the copy to your storefront, and choose Edit Theme Files on the copy. BigCommerce notes that copied themes no longer receive automatic marketplace theme updates.
Will the Widget Code survive theme updates?
Your edited copy keeps the code, but it does not receive marketplace theme updates. When you move to a newer version of your theme, paste the Widget Code into the new version's base.html before you apply it. Your translations are stored in SiteTran, so nothing needs to be translated again.
Does SiteTran translate faceted search, quick view and the cart preview?
Yes. Stencil themes load filter results, sorting, pagination, quick view, quick search and the cart preview after the page has loaded. SiteTran continuously watches the page for new content and translates it when it appears, including filter names and values that come from your product options.
How does checkout work for international shoppers?
BigCommerce's checkout is pre-translated into 11 languages and shows your storefront's language, and BigCommerce's multi-language storefronts can show each shopper checkout in their own language. Like every storefront translation tool, checkout and order confirmation use BigCommerce's own language settings rather than your theme. Book a call and we will help you plan checkout for your markets.
Will SiteTran change my products, prices or currency?
No. SiteTran translates the text displayed in the shopper's browser. Products, categories, prices, stock and orders stay as they are in BigCommerce, and currency conversion stays with BigCommerce's own currency settings. Text that shoppers type, such as addresses and order notes, is left as typed.
Should I use BigCommerce's built-in multi-language storefronts instead?
They are a good fit if you have up to five languages and the team to write a translation for every product, category and setting. BigCommerce adds language subfolders, translated product URLs and translated checkout. SiteTran fits when you want more languages, machine translation with human review, or translations for web pages, Page Builder widgets and app content without entering them field by field.
Do translated pages get their own URLs for SEO?
By default, every language is served from your store's existing URLs and the shopper's choice is remembered. If you need indexable language URLs such as /es/ or es.yourstore.com, SiteTran's Static Translation API can return translated HTML for them, served by a proxy or edge worker in front of your storefront. Book a call and we will help you plan it.
Can I keep SKUs, brand names and customer data untranslated?
Yes. Add brand and product line names to the Glossary, add translate="no" or the notranslate class to elements in your theme templates, or list selectors in sitetran.ignore_selectors. Use this for SKUs, part numbers and the addresses and order details shown in My Account.
Does SiteTran work with Multi-Storefront and B2B Edition?
Each storefront in Multi-Storefront has its own theme, so add the Widget Code to the base.html of every storefront you want to translate. Text that B2B Edition and other apps add to your storefront pages is translated like any other text, while BigCommerce provides its own translations for the B2B Buyer Portal interface.
Can I use machine translation and still review it?
Yes. You can get machine translation suggestions from DeepL, Google Translate or OpenAI, automatically translate new phrases, and decide whether those translations are approved automatically or reviewed first. You can also invite human translators and reviewers for each language and use AI Translation Review.
Can I test translations before shoppers see them?
Yes. A language stays hidden from shoppers until you set it to Live. You can also turn on Hide All Widgets On Site (dev mode) under Settings, then Publishing, and add ?sitetran=on to your store's URL to preview the language dropdown yourself.
Is there a free plan?
Yes. The Free plan includes 7,000 words in your site, 3,000 translated pageviews per month and 7,000 machine translations, with unlimited languages and teammates. Paid plans raise those limits and start at $3 per month.
What happens if I go over my plan's limits?
You will be prompted to upgrade or buy additional credits. Your existing translations remain intact, and new translations are paused until you upgrade.
