How it works

Add SiteTran to Shift4Shop in three steps

SiteTran runs as a small Widget Code in your theme's frame.html, the template Shift4Shop wraps around every page of your store by default. Shift4Shop keeps rendering your store as usual, and SiteTran shows each shopper their language.

1

Create your SiteTran site

Sign up free and add your store. Copy your Widget Code from the Dropdown Style page. It adds the language dropdown to your storefront.

2

Paste it into frame.html

In your Shift4Shop Store Manager, open the Template Editor for your theme, click frame.html, and paste the Widget Code right before </body>. Then save.

Settings›Design›Themes & Styles›Template Editor
3

Translate and publish

Open your store and pick a language. SiteTran discovers your text as you browse, then you translate it with AI, your own translators, or both, and publish.

What the Widget Code looks like
<script>var sitetran = {site_id: your_site_id};</script>
<script src="//c.sitetran.com/widget/v3.js"></script>
<div id="sitetran_translate_element"></div>

SiteTran gives you your own ready-to-paste code, with your site ID already in it. The div is where the language dropdown appears.

Template Editor or Global Footer? Our setup guide uses frame.html. If you'd rather not edit the template, paste the same three lines into Content › Header and Footer › Global Footer with WYSIWYG off. Use one place, not both.
Not showing yet? Clear Shift4Shop's cacheGo to Settings › General › Store Settings, open the General tab and click Clear Cache under Performance. Then reload your store.
Want the dropdown in your header? The div sets where the dropdown appears. Keep the two script lines before </body> and move just the div into your header in frame.html, or position it with CSS.

Answers to the questions Shift4Shop merchants ask

Shift4Shop's own language setting swaps your store's English for one other Latin-alphabet language. SiteTran lets one store offer every language your shoppers speak. Here's how it handles each part of a Shift4Shop store.

Translated

QuickCart and Quick View

When Add to Cart Action is set to QuickCart, Shift4Shop shows a cart preview pop-up after the page has loaded. Quick View opens products from category pages the same way. SiteTran watches the page for new content and translates it as it appears.

Translated

Shift4Shop's own labels

Buttons, headings and instructions from Store Language, plus error messages from System Messages, are shown on your pages, so SiteTran translates them with everything else. Keep your Store Language in English and let SiteTran add the other languages.

One catalog

Products, categories and content pages

Product names, descriptions, options, category pages, the blog and Site Content pages are translated as shoppers see them. You don't duplicate your catalog into a second store, and nothing is written back to Shift4Shop.

Many languages at once

Chinese, Korean, Arabic and more

Shift4Shop says its store language supports only Latin-alphabet languages, one at a time. SiteTran applies translations in the shopper's browser, so one store can offer Spanish, French, Chinese and right-to-left Arabic side by side.

Labels translated

Prices, shipping and taxes

Labels such as "Subtotal", "Qty" and your free shipping message are translated, while your prices, shipping rates and tax rules keep working exactly as you set them in Shift4Shop.

Translated

Apps and add-ons

Text that apps, review widgets and add-ons place on your pages is translated like the rest of your store, including content they load after the page opens.

Who you can reach

Your next customers may already be in the US

Shift4Shop is built for US merchants, and a US store doesn't have to go overseas to find shoppers who prefer another language. Start with the languages your customers already speak.

Spanish
44.9Mpeople in the US speak Spanish at home

Spanish-speaking US shoppers

The largest group you can reach without changing shipping zones, currency or tax setup. Use Translation Rules to set the tone you want, such as formal "usted", and the Glossary for gear terms you never want reworded.

French

French-speaking Canada

If you ship to Canada, French reaches Quebec and francophone shoppers across the country. Add a Translation Rule for Canadian French vocabulary, and say clearly that prices are in US dollars.

Chinese, Vietnamese, Korean…
74.1Mpeople in the US speak a language other than English at home

Every other language at home

That's about 23% of people age 5 and older, and many of them read non-Latin scripts. With SiteTran, each one is just another language on the same store, and every plan includes unlimited languages.

What gets translated on a Shift4Shop store, including checkout

Most of your store is rendered from frame.html, so one paste covers every storefront page. Checkout takes one quick request to Shift4Shop support. Here's the map for launch day.

Checkout setup

Translate checkout with one support ticket

Shift4Shop applies a Content Security Policy to checkout pages, which allowlists the scripts that run there. Open a ticket with Shift4Shop support and ask them to allow SiteTran's widget, which loads from c.sitetran.com and connects to www.sitetran.com.

Once it's allowed, single-page and 3-page checkout and the thank-you page are translated like the rest of your store.

Launch checklist

Go live with confidence

Before you promote a language, browse a product page, open QuickCart and place a test order in that language, so every phrase on the way to checkout is discovered and approved.

Have a native speaker review your best sellers, size charts and return policy. Book a call and we'll help you plan the rollout for your markets.

Every way to make a Shift4Shop store multilingual

Shift4Shop has no built-in language switcher. Here's what each route involves, from editing Store Language to running a second store.

Store Language swaps your language

Shift4Shop's Store Language, System Messages and email templates let you rewrite your store's built-in text in another language. That changes it for every shopper. To offer two languages natively, Shift4Shop's guidance is to run a separate store for each.

Store data vs. what shoppers see

Rewriting Store Language or duplicating a store changes what's saved in Shift4Shop. Translation services and SiteTran translate the finished page, so one store serves every language and theme, app and product text is included.

How it works Replace the English text in Store Language, System Messages and emails with your new language. Open another Shift4Shop store and rebuild your catalog and pages in the second language. An embedded widget machine-translates the page in the shopper's browser. A script in frame.html, or an app from the Shift4Shop App Store, serves translated pages. SiteTran translates your storefront as it renders, using translations you control.

Translation quality

Machine speed for the catalog, human care where it counts

Let machine translation handle hundreds of product descriptions, then have a native speaker review your best sellers, size charts and return policy before you promote a language.

  • Machine translation from DeepL, Google and OpenAI

Get suggestions for any phrase, or translate new phrases automatically as you add products. You choose whether they're approved automatically or reviewed first. No API keys to manage.

  • Translators and reviewers per language

Invite a bilingual teammate, a freelancer or an agency for each language, and choose who can approve. Turn on AI Translation Review for a second opinion on each translation.

  • Glossary, rules and translation memory

Keep brand and model names consistent in the Glossary, set Translation Rules that AI translation follows, such as formal "usted" or Canadian French terms, and reuse past work with Similar Phrases.

  • A language dropdown that fits your theme

Choose from three dropdown types, with or without flags, and add your own CSS so it matches your header. Shoppers are switched to their browser language automatically.

Everything shoppers and social cards read

SiteTran translates more than visible text. When a shopper switches language, the page's metadata switches with it.

  • Page titles and meta descriptions you set for products, categories and content pages
  • Open Graph and Twitter tags for link previews
  • Product image alt text, tooltips, placeholders and ARIA labels
  • The page's lang attribute, set to the selected language
Advanced setup

Language URLs for Google

By default, every language uses your store's existing URLs and the shopper's choice is remembered. For a separate, indexable page per language, SiteTran's Static Translation API returns translated HTML for URLs like these:

yourstore.com/summit-38l-hiking-backpack_p_214.htmlEnglish
yourstore.com/es/summit-38l-hiking-backpack_p_214.htmlSubdirectory
es.yourstore.com/summit-38l-hiking-backpack_p_214.htmlSubdomain

On a hosted Shift4Shop store, a proxy or edge worker in front of your domain calls the API and caches the result. We'll help you decide whether it's worth it for your markets.

Troubleshooting

Shift4Shop translation not working? Check these first

Most setup questions come down to one of these quick fixes. Our team is happy to look at your store too.

1The language dropdown doesn't appear

  1. Check that you edited frame.html for the theme your store is using, and saved.
  2. Make sure all three lines are there, including the div.
  3. In SiteTran, make sure the language is both Active and Live.
  4. If Hide All Widgets On Site (dev mode) is on, add ?sitetran=on to your URL.
Language not appearing in the dropdown →

2It disappeared after a theme change

  1. Each theme has its own templates, so a new theme comes with its own frame.html.
  2. Add the Widget Code to the new theme's frame.html, or use the Global Footer, which isn't part of the theme.
  3. Clear the cache in Settings › General › Store Settings.

3Checkout is still in English

  1. Open the browser console on checkout. A "Refused to load the script" message means checkout's script allowlist needs updating.
  2. Ask Shift4Shop support to allow c.sitetran.com and www.sitetran.com on checkout.
  3. Reload checkout once they confirm, and pick your language again.

4Some text is still in the original language

  1. SiteTran discovers text when it's shown, so open QuickCart, Quick View and any tabs you need translated.
  2. A translation appears only after it's approved and published.
  3. Check that the text isn't excluded with translate="no" or sitetran.ignore_selectors.
How dynamic content is translated →

5My changes aren't showing yet

  1. After you approve and publish, translation data can take up to 30 seconds to update.
  2. A shopper's browser can keep translation data cached for up to 10 minutes.
  3. Try a hard refresh or a private window, and clear Shift4Shop's cache after template edits.
New translations aren't appearing →

6SKUs or customer names are translated

  1. Add translate="no" to those elements in your templates, or list their selectors in sitetran.ignore_selectors.
  2. Use variables for names, dates and prices inside a sentence.
  3. Add brand and model names to the Glossary.
Exclude phrases from translation →

Shift4Shop translation questions

Have another question? Our team is happy to help with your Shift4Shop setup.

Email support
How do I add SiteTran to my Shift4Shop store?
Create a free SiteTran site and copy your Widget Code from the Dropdown Style page. In your Shift4Shop Store Manager, go to Settings, then Design, then Themes & Styles, and open the Template Editor. Click frame.html, paste the code right before the closing </body> tag and save. Then open your store and pick a language from the dropdown. SiteTran starts discovering your phrases so you can translate them.
Does Shift4Shop support multiple languages on its own?
Not in one store. Shift4Shop's Store Language setting lets you replace your store's built-in text with one other language, and Shift4Shop says it supports only languages written in the Latin alphabet. To offer more than one language natively, Shift4Shop's guidance is to run a separate store per language. SiteTran adds a language dropdown to your existing store instead.
Does it work with 3dcart stores and older themes?
Yes. Shift4Shop is the new name for 3dcart, and every theme, including Core themes, uses frame.html as the page template by default. In some versions of the Store Manager, the Template Editor opens from an Edit Template (HTML) button on the Themes & Styles page. You can also paste the Widget Code into the Global Footer under Content, then Header and Footer, with WYSIWYG turned off.
Do I need an app from the Shift4Shop App Store?
No. SiteTran is not a Shift4Shop app. It works as a short Widget Code in your theme, so there is nothing to install or update, and it does not need access to your Store Manager, products or orders.
Is the Shift4Shop checkout translated?
Yes, with one quick setup step. Shift4Shop applies a Content Security Policy to checkout pages, so open a support ticket with Shift4Shop and ask them to allow SiteTran's widget from c.sitetran.com and www.sitetran.com. Once it is allowed, checkout and the thank-you page are translated like the rest of your store.
Does SiteTran translate the QuickCart pop-up and Quick View?
Yes. Shift4Shop opens QuickCart and Quick View after the page has loaded. SiteTran continuously watches the page for new content and translates it when it appears.
Can I offer Spanish to US shoppers and French to Canadian shoppers at the same time?
Yes. Add both languages to your SiteTran site and shoppers choose from the language dropdown. By default, SiteTran also switches each shopper to their browser language when it is available. Every plan includes unlimited languages, and you can set Translation Rules per language, such as formal Spanish or Canadian French vocabulary.
Will SiteTran change my products, prices or orders?
No. SiteTran only changes the text displayed in the shopper's browser. Products, prices, shipping rates, taxes and orders stay as they are in Shift4Shop, and text that shoppers type, such as addresses and order comments, is left as typed.
Are order confirmation emails translated?
Like every website translation tool, SiteTran translates what shoppers see on your pages, and order emails are sent by Shift4Shop using the templates under Settings, then Design, then Emails. Many stores keep those templates short and clear, in English or bilingual.
Do translated pages get their own URLs for SEO?
By default, every language is served from your store's existing URLs and the shopper's choice is remembered. If you need indexable language URLs such as /es/ or es.yourstore.com, SiteTran's Static Translation API can return translated HTML for them. On a hosted Shift4Shop store, that runs through a proxy or edge worker in front of your domain. Book a call and we will help you plan it.
Can I use machine translation and still review it?
Yes. You can get machine translation suggestions from DeepL, Google Translate or OpenAI, automatically translate new phrases, and decide whether those translations are approved automatically or reviewed first. You do not need your own API keys. You can also invite human translators and reviewers for each language and use AI Translation Review.
Can I keep brand names, SKUs and customer data untranslated?
Yes. Add brand and model names to the Glossary, add translate="no" or the notranslate class to elements in your templates, or list selectors in sitetran.ignore_selectors. Use this for SKUs, part numbers and the names, addresses and order details shown in My Account.
Can I test translations before shoppers see them?
Yes. A language stays hidden from shoppers until you set it to Live. You can also turn on Hide All Widgets On Site (dev mode) under Settings, then Publishing, and add ?sitetran=on to your store's URL to preview the language dropdown yourself.
Is there a free plan?
Yes. The Free plan includes 7,000 words in your site, 3,000 translated pageviews per month and 7,000 machine translations, with unlimited languages and teammates. Paid plans raise those limits and start at $3 per month.
What happens if I go over my plan's limits?
You will be prompted to upgrade or buy additional credits. Your existing translations remain intact, and new translations are paused until you upgrade.
