How it works

Add SiteTran to Shopify in three steps

SiteTran runs as a small script in your theme's layout file. Shopify keeps rendering your store as usual, and SiteTran shows each shopper their language.

1

Create your SiteTran site

Sign up free and create a site for your store. SiteTran gives you your Widget Code, which adds the language dropdown to your storefront.

2

Paste it into theme.liquid

Open your theme's code, then paste the Widget Code into theme.liquid right before </body> and click Save. Every page that uses your theme loads it.

Online Store›Themes›···›Edit code›theme.liquid
3

Translate and publish

Open your store and pick a language. SiteTran discovers your text as you browse, then you translate it with AI, your own translators, or both, and publish.

What the Widget Code looks like
<script>var sitetran = { site_id: your_site_id };</script>
<script src="//c.sitetran.com/widget/v3.js"></script>
<div id="sitetran_translate_element"></div>

SiteTran gives you your own ready-to-paste code, with your site ID already in it.

Duplicate your theme firstShopify recommends a backup copy before you edit code, so you can always go back.
Paid theme on trial?Shopify only lets you edit a paid theme's code after you buy it.
One theme at a timeThe code lives in one theme. Paste it again when you publish a different theme.

What gets translated in a Shopify store

A Shopify storefront is your theme, your catalog and the apps you've installed, much of it loading after the page does. Here's how SiteTran handles each part, so shoppers can browse and buy in their own language.

Translated

Cart drawers and quick views

Cart drawers, mini carts, quick-view popups, predictive search and "load more" collections are translated when they appear. SiteTran keeps watching the page for new content.

Translated

Products and variants

Titles, descriptions, option names like Size and Color, variant values, badges and stock messages. When a shopper picks a variant and the theme updates the page, the new text is translated too.

Translated

Theme text and sections

Announcement bars, menus, footers, buttons, filters, blog posts and pages. Whatever your theme renders, including text from its locale files and the theme editor, is translated as it's shown.

Translated on the page

Apps on your storefront

Review widgets, upsells, size charts and pop-ups that add their text to your page are translated like your own content, in every language you add.

Unchanged

Your Shopify admin

SiteTran never connects to your admin. Products, metafields, orders, and any translations you keep in Shopify stay exactly as they are. You don't need duplicate products per language.

Works with Shopify Markets

Prices and currency

SiteTran handles language and Shopify Markets handles currency, local prices and where you sell, so the two work side by side.

Uses your Shopify settings

Checkout and order emails

Like every storefront translation tool, checkout and order emails use your Shopify language settings, and Shopify pre-translates checkout in 33 languages.

Translated

Forms and messages

Contact and newsletter forms, placeholders, error messages and success notes are translated, and what shoppers type reaches you as typed.

Meta tags translated

SEO and URLs

Page titles, meta descriptions and social tags are translated. Languages share your store's URLs by default, and indexable language URLs are available through the Static Translation API. See the details.

Every way to make a Shopify store multilingual

You can translate a Shopify store with Shopify's free Translate & Adapt app, with a translation app from the Shopify App Store, or with a translation layer like SiteTran. They store translations in different places, and that shapes what each covers best.

Content stored in Shopify

Products, collections, pages, blog posts, menus, metafields and your theme's text. Shopify can hold a translation of each one, and serve it at language URLs such as /fr.

Content rendered on the page

Text that apps and scripts add to your storefront: review widgets, upsells, size charts, pop-ups and parts of cart drawers. Shopify's own translation tools usually don't store it.

How it works Stores a translation of each product, collection, page and theme string inside Shopify. Most write translations into Shopify; some translate the storefront as it loads. Check each app. Translates your storefront as it renders in the shopper's browser.
Setup Installed when you add a language under Settings › Languages. Install the app, approve its access to your store, turn on its app embed. Paste the Widget Code into theme.liquid and save.
Third-party app content Not covered unless the app stores it as a Shopify translatable resource. Varies. Several apps include it only on paid plans. Translated as it appears on your storefront.
Machine translation Automatic translation for up to 2 languages; more languages by hand or CSV. Yes, usually limited by words, products or languages per plan. DeepL, Google Translate and OpenAI, in unlimited languages.
Review and approval Side-by-side editor in your Shopify admin. Varies from a simple editor to team workflows. Translators, reviewers, Glossary, Translation Rules and publishing built in.
Language URLs Native, such as /fr, with automatic hreflang tags. Usually Shopify's native URLs, or the app's own subdomains or subdirectories. Same URL by default. Indexable language URLs through the Static Translation API.
Cost Free. Up to 20 languages, or 30 on Shopify Plus. Free tiers, then about $10 to $100 a month. Free plan, paid plans from $3/month. Unlimited languages.

You can combine approaches. For example, some stores keep Translate & Adapt for a published language and use SiteTran for app content and extra languages. Talk to us before mixing them so shoppers don't see two language switchers.

Translation quality

Product copy that sells in every language

Start with machine translation and refine it with your own team. You decide what gets approved and when it goes live in your store.

  • Machine translation from DeepL, Google and OpenAI

Get suggestions for any phrase, or translate new products automatically as they appear. You choose whether they're approved automatically or reviewed first.

  • Translators and reviewers per language

Invite a native speaker for each market and choose who can approve. Turn on AI Translation Review for a second opinion on each translation.

  • Glossary, rules and translation memory

Lock your brand and product names in the Glossary, set Translation Rules such as formal or informal tone that AI translation follows, and reuse past work with Similar Phrases.

  • Variables for stock, prices and names

Translate "Only 3 left in stock" once with a variable or Automatic Number Variables, and it works for every number.

  • A language dropdown that fits your theme

Choose from three dropdown types, with or without flags, and add your own CSS. Shoppers are switched to their browser language automatically.

SiteTran translates more than visible text. When a shopper switches language, the page's metadata switches with it.

Language URLs for Google

By default, every language uses your store's existing URLs and the shopper's choice is remembered. For a separate, indexable page per language, SiteTran's Static Translation API returns translated HTML for URLs like these:

yourstore.com/products/mugEnglish
yourstore.com/es/products/mugSubdirectory
es.yourstore.com/products/mugSubdomain

You serve these pages through a proxy or edge worker in front of your store. Shopify's native /es URLs are a separate route that shows translations stored in Shopify. We'll help you choose.

Launch checklist

Before you open your store to new markets

Six Shopify-specific checks that separate a store that's translated from a store that sells in that language.

  1. Click through every state

SiteTran discovers text when it's shown. Open the cart drawer, pick each variant, run a search and trigger your pop-ups once, or turn on Machine Translation Auto Translate so new text is translated as shoppers find it.

  2. Keep one language switcher

If your theme's own language selector is turned on in the theme editor, shoppers may see two. Use SiteTran's dropdown and position it with CSS away from your cart button and chat bubble.

  3. Plan your Shopify language settings

Languages published under Settings › Languages get their own Shopify URLs, which show translations stored in Shopify. Publish one there as part of a planned checkout or SEO setup, and let SiteTran handle your storefront languages.

  4. Protect brand and product names

Add your brand, collection and product names to the Glossary. Add translate="no" in your Liquid templates to SKUs, ingredient codes or anything that must never change.

  5. Fix long labels and image text

German and French buttons run longer. Add CSS per language where a label wraps, and swap banner images that have English text baked in.

  6. Use variables for changing numbers

Stock counts, free shipping thresholds and countdowns change constantly. Use variables or Automatic Number Variables so one translation covers every value.

Troubleshooting

Shopify translation not working? Check these first

Most setup questions come down to which theme the code is in, or a translation that hasn't been published yet.

1The language dropdown doesn't appear

  1. Check that you edited your published theme, not a copy. Each theme has its own theme.liquid.
  2. Paste the Widget Code right before </body> in theme.liquid, then click Save.
  3. In SiteTran, make sure the language is both Active and Live.
  4. If Hide All Widgets On Site (dev mode) is on, add ?sitetran=on to your store's URL.
Language not appearing in the dropdown →

2Cart drawer or variant text is in English

  1. Open the cart drawer and pick each variant once so SiteTran can discover that text.
  2. A translation appears only after it's approved and published.
  3. To translate new text automatically, turn on Machine Translation Auto Translate.
How dynamic content is translated →

3Translations stopped after a theme change

  1. Publishing a different theme? Paste the Widget Code into its theme.liquid too.
  2. After a theme update, Shopify may say code edits could not be included. Copy the Widget Code back in.
  3. Your translations are stored in SiteTran, so nothing needs to be redone.
Shopify setup guide →

4The dropdown overlaps the cart or chat button

  1. Position #sitetran_translate_element with CSS in your dropdown style, for example fixed to a different corner.
  2. Choose a more compact dropdown type, with or without flags.
  3. Turn off your theme's own language selector so shoppers see one switcher.
Change the dropdown's position →

5My changes aren't showing yet

  1. After you approve and publish, translation data can take up to 30 seconds to update.
  2. A visitor's browser can keep translation data cached for up to 10 minutes.
  3. Try a hard refresh or a private window.
New translations aren't appearing →

6Names, SKUs or customer data are translated

  1. Add class="notranslate" or translate="no" to those elements in your Liquid templates, or list selectors in sitetran.ignore_selectors.
  2. Add brand and product names to the Glossary.
  3. Keep account pages free of personal data by excluding those elements.
Exclude phrases from translation →

Shopify translation questions

Email support
How do I add SiteTran to my Shopify store?
Create a free SiteTran site and copy your Widget Code. In your Shopify admin, go to Online Store, then Themes, click the ··· menu next to your theme and choose Edit code. Open theme.liquid in the Layout folder, paste the code right before the closing </body> tag and click Save. Visit your store, pick a language from the dropdown, and SiteTran starts discovering your phrases so you can translate them.
Is SiteTran an app I install from the Shopify App Store?
No. SiteTran is a short script that you paste into your theme once. There is no app to install, no access to your Shopify admin to approve, and no app subscription on your Shopify bill. You manage languages, translators and translations in SiteTran.
Which Shopify plans does SiteTran work with?
Any plan that includes the Online Store sales channel with a theme whose code you can edit. If you are trying out a paid theme, Shopify lets you edit its code once you buy it.
Does SiteTran translate the cart drawer and variant options?
Yes. SiteTran keeps watching the page for content that appears after it loads, so the cart drawer, variant names, stock messages, quick-view popups, filters and items loaded by infinite scroll are translated when they appear.
How does checkout work in other languages?
Your storefront, product pages and cart are translated by SiteTran right up to checkout. Like every storefront translation tool, Shopify's checkout and order emails use your Shopify language settings: Shopify pre-translates checkout content in 33 languages for languages you publish under Settings, then Languages. Book a call and we will help you plan a translated checkout for your store.
Will SiteTran change my products or other Shopify data?
No. SiteTran only changes the text displayed in the shopper's browser. Products, collections, metafields, orders and translations you keep in Shopify stay exactly as they are, and text that shoppers type into forms is left as typed.
Does SiteTran translate content from other Shopify apps, like product reviews?
Yes, when the app adds its content to your storefront page, as most review, upsell, size chart and announcement apps do. SiteTran discovers that text like any other phrase and translates it in every language you add.
How is SiteTran different from Shopify Translate & Adapt?
Translate & Adapt is Shopify's free app for storing translations of your products, collections, pages and theme text inside Shopify. It can auto-translate up to two languages, and covers third-party app content only when the app stores it as a Shopify translatable resource. SiteTran translates your storefront as it renders, including app content, with machine translation in unlimited languages, your own translators and reviewers, a Glossary and Translation Rules.
Can I use SiteTran with Shopify Markets?
Yes. Shopify Markets keeps handling currencies, prices and where you sell, and SiteTran handles the language your storefront is shown in. If you also publish languages in Shopify for checkout or SEO, add their translations in Shopify too, so those language URLs show translated content.
Do translated Shopify pages get their own URLs for SEO?
By default, every language is served from your store's existing URLs and the shopper's choice is remembered. If you need indexable language URLs such as /es/ or es.yourstore.com, SiteTran's Static Translation API can return translated HTML for them, served through a proxy or edge worker in front of your store. Book a call and we will help you plan it.
Are page titles and meta descriptions translated?
Yes. Along with visible text, SiteTran translates the page title, meta description, Open Graph and Twitter tags, image alt text, placeholders, tooltips and ARIA labels. It also updates the page's lang attribute to the selected language.
What happens to SiteTran when I update or change my theme?
The Widget Code lives in one theme's theme.liquid file. If you publish a different theme, paste the code into that theme too. When you update a theme, Shopify carries over code edits that don't conflict with the update and tells you when it could not include them, so check theme.liquid after every update. Your translations are stored in SiteTran and are not affected.
Can I keep product names, brand terms or SKUs untranslated?
Yes. Add the notranslate class or the translate="no" attribute to any element in your Liquid templates, or list selectors in sitetran.ignore_selectors. Add brand and product names to the Glossary so translators and AI translation handle them the same way everywhere.
Is there a free plan?
Yes. The Free plan includes 7,000 words in your site, 3,000 translated pageviews per month and 7,000 machine translations, with unlimited languages and teammates. Paid plans raise those limits and start at $3 per month.
Can I test translations before shoppers see them?
Yes. A language stays hidden from shoppers until you set it to Live. You can also turn on Hide All Widgets On Site (dev mode) under Settings, then Publishing, and add ?sitetran=on to your store's URL to preview the language dropdown yourself.
