What is Similar Phrases?

Similar Phrases is SiteTran’s Translation Memory feature.

When you select a phrase in the translator interface, SiteTran looks for previously translated phrases that are the same or similar and shows them to you. You can then reuse a good past translation or adapt it for the new phrase.

This helps human translators work faster, and it also helps AI produce better translations by using strong past translations as guidance.

How it works

SiteTran compares the phrase you are working on against other source phrases that already have translations.

If it finds useful matches, you will see them in the Similar Phrases panel along with their existing translations.

This is especially useful for repeated UI text, support content, product messaging, and other phrases that appear again with small wording changes.

How it helps AI

Similar Phrases is not only for human translators. It is also heavily used by AI translation.

When SiteTran finds strong Translation Memory matches, AI can use that earlier translation as guidance instead of guessing from scratch. This helps AI stay closer to wording your team has already used and approved.

In practical terms, that usually means better consistency, fewer wording surprises, and less cleanup after AI translation.

How to use it

  1. Open the translator interface.
  2. Select a phrase.
  3. Look at the Similar Phrases panel.
  4. Reuse the existing translation if it fits, or adapt it if needed.

The main idea is simple: if a good translation already exists, start from that instead of starting over.

What to keep in mind

Translation Memory is a helper, not something to follow blindly.

If the meaning is the same, you can often reuse the translation. If the phrase is only partly similar, use the earlier translation as a starting point and adjust it so it fits the new phrase correctly.

This same idea applies to AI as well. Similar Phrases improves AI output, but the final translation still needs to fit the exact phrase being translated.

Using Similar Phrases across sites

You can also use Similar Phrases from other sites in your team with Shared Resources.

This is useful when multiple sites share similar content, product language, or workflows and you want both your translators and your AI translations to stay consistent across projects.

Good to know

Similar Phrases becomes more useful over time as your team creates more translations.

The more high-quality translations you already have, the more helpful Translation Memory becomes for both human translation and AI-assisted translation.
